30/03 :  JLTAWA Professional Learning Seminar over for another year.

    A fantastic two days of professional learning, fun and friendship has been enjoyed by more than 50 people at the Atrium Hotel in Mandurah. Once again, several members travelled from country schools to join us and it was great to meet up with old friends and make some new ones.

With 16 members presenting sessions over the two days, it was a great example of collaboration and team-work. Often the best PL is that which is presented by practising teachers to their colleagues.

A special thanks needs to go to our President, Danielle de Witt, who took on the lion's share of organising this event, especially co-ordinating the speakers and booking the venue, accommodation and meals. We wish her well as she leaves the Committee after two years as President to embark on the next phase of her life - motherhood!

The 2009 AGM was held on Friday afternoon, and the new Committee was elected:
President: Chris Graham
Vice President: Heidi Rybak
Secretary: Jessica Perrin
Treasurer: Susette Rose
ARM Panel Representative: Kumiko Sue
Primary Representative: Amy Boylett
MLTAWA Representative: Janine Tate
Committee: Belinda Fogliani
Committee: Yvette Foulk
Committee: Nathan Harvey
Committee: Bae Kent
Committee: Andrea Kurasho
Committee: Kristy Teal
Committee: Margo Whittle

We look forward to seeing as many members as possible at events during 2009.

19/04 :  Sun-A International Academy

   Late last term, I was contacted by a lovely lady called Oe-Sensei from Sun-A International Academy in Tokyo. She was visiting Perth for a few days and asked to meet with me and talk about her academy. Oe-Sensei is a wonderful lady who believes strongly in multiculturalism and sharing of cultures and language, hence the realisation of the Sun-A International Academy. During our meeting we discussed how Japanese Language teachers could benefit from visiting the academy in Tokyo and so I have summarised the opportunities available for teachers and students visiting Tokyo:

1. FREE - students & teachers in Tokyo are welcome to visit the Sun-A International Academy for a 1/2 day where they can engage in cultural activities (calligraphy, yukata wearing, dance etc) with students and staff at the academy;
2. Fee paying - If you are taking students to Tokyo and are looking for somewhere to stay, the academy also has dormitories available. Depending on the cost, languae lessons can also be included and the academy is located in the middle of Tokyo, close to transport and shops;
3. Fee paying - As the academy is for students who have graduated high school, if you have any former or Year 12 students planning to visit Japan, the academy offers a variety of language courses (different lengths, levels etc) for international students. The academy is recognised by several Ministries and can also take care of visa requirements for long term visitors.
3. Fee Paying - Any teachers who would like to brush up on their Japanese are also welcome to enrol in a short course whilst in Tokyo.

If you would like more information, please contact Oe Sensei at [email] directly.
